The Slaughterhouse

This is the one of the largest and longest indoor haunted attractions in Des Moines, with plenty to explore and enjoy. The ghosts and zombies will certainly scare you as you navigate through things. There may even be some funky slaughterhouse smells that make the experience seem all too real.

The Slaughterhouse is located at the former Iowa Paint Factory. It’s more than just a haunted house, as those who visit are expected to enjoy a theme, “a slaughterhouse gone wrong.” The Slaughterhouse is handicap accessible, with staff available to guide you through the house.

Sleepy Hollow Scream Park

One park. Ten attractions. Sleepy Hollow is an elaborate Halloween theme park, with every ticket including admission to the theme-park-style village, haunted attractions, and a park full of vendors and various activities.

Previous attractions have included the Castle of Blood, starting with the tour of a damp and dark torture chamber before venturing into the castle and coming face-

This is a bit of a different haunted experience, but the Jordan House, the Victorian home office of the West Des Moines Historical Society, offers tours throughout the area. Those who visit will learn about the house’s link to the Underground Railroad. It is believed that the house is haunted, and previous visitors have reported encounters with ghosts. Spooky.

The society is also teaming up with the West Des Moines Public Library to present, “A Death in the Family; Victorian Death Rituals,” on October 21. Presenter Joan Ferry will talk about Victorian death customs and rituals.
