Stop by for your morning pick-me-up, or something to keep you going through the afternoon. Here are three of the best coffee shops near Des Moines to pick up a cup of joe.
DSM is the premiere spot for nitro coffee, hot brew coffee, espresso drinks, and gelato. And if that makes it sound like there’s a lot going on here, that’s because there is. And DSM does it all well. Try a nitro coffee, cold-brewed and infused with nitrogen. It’s served from the tap and provides a beer-like head from the nitrogen, with bubbly carbonation.
A hot espresso can warm you up on a cold morning, as can a hot brew coffee. Iced coffee is available, too. DSM features an Iowa roaster each month, including favorites like Sidecar Coffee, Morning Bell Coffee Roasters, and Caturra Coffee.
Freedom Blend got its start in 2011, created by Freedom for Youth to bring employment opportunities to young people in the area. Bags were roasted and sold out of a small building. The new facilities, built just recently, continue to empower young adults through work training and life skills.
The fair trade coffee is roasted in-house. Try out one of the daily brews, an americano, cappuccino, or latte. There are also specialty summer drinks, including hibiscus iced tea and a turmeric latte. Breakfast and lunch are served daily, with seasonal specials available. If your church, organization, or business wants to serve Freedom Blend, get in touch with them about buying in bulk.
This trendy café is locally owned and operated, located near Drake University. They serve coffee, espresso, tea, wine, beer, locally baked goods, fresh sandwiches, and desserts, too. They sell Kickapoo Coffee, a Wisconsin-based fair trade artisan roaster. This coffee is roasted weekly, with artisan quality beans delivering unique flavor.
Spend some time relaxing at this shop, where you’ll find two roasts of drip coffee, along with individual Chemex and V60 pour-overs. From espressos to lattes to cappuccinos to homemade Chai, you’ll find it all at Mars. If you need space for an event, host it here. A sound system and stage area are available for use.
